Happy Birthday Diana

Today would have been the 46th Birthday of the late, Diana, Princess of Wales, and 10 years ago this August, she died in that horrible Paris car crash. To mark her birthday, her son's Princes William and Harry put on a wonderul concert at Wembley. Broadcast live on TV to over 140 countries, around 50 million households, that's some audience!

What I liked about the coverage I've seen here on the BBC is the special reports of Diana's work with different charities, causes and groups, which were also played at the stadium, just went to prove what a warm and wonderful human being the world lost 10 years ago. Some were moving, some were funny and as Prince William said on stage "This evening is about all that our mother loved in life - music, dance, her charities and her family and friends," Meanwhile Prince Harry paid tribute to fellow soldiers currently serving in Iraq.

The six-hour show, opened with Elton John and will apparently finish with him doing 'Candle in the wind' by special request of the two princes. You may remember, that at her funeral, Elton changed the words of the song especially for Diana and after he sang it at the Abby vowed never to sing it again. I hope he sings it again, it was a moving number and a fitting tribute to end those mammoth birthday celebration.

Another thing that has been so surprisingly good about this concert, is the variety of acts performing, Sir Elton John, Duran Duran (who sounded really really crap!) Lilly Allen, The Feeling (who were bloody great) Take That, Tom Jones, Status Quo, Will Young, The English National Ballet and loads of others. I mean seeing Swan Lake on a stage at a pop concert in front of 63,000 fans in the stadium and broadcast to millions more has got to be a first, it was truly amazing and those dancers got a standing ovation - pure magic

There were many stars and celebs introducing acts or films of the late princess, including, Keifer Sutherland, Dennis Hopper and Simon Cowell. Simon even loved the show which was pretty strange and gave the princes praise for putting on such a great gig - yes Simon Cowell being nice for a change!

The BBC did a very good job, well from what I've seen so far today, of televising the event. It was good to see they had a camera on the royal box, to see, unobtrusive, shots of the two young men enjoying the show. All in all, so far, it's been a very good and very fitting tribute to the late Princess.
